It is the journey that matters

Does the End Justify the Means?

"It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end."

- Ursula K LeGuin

I had a dream...

When you started your business did you have a dream about how it was going to be somewhere in the not too distant future? I don't mean goals (which I definitely recommend), but a full blown dream where your most heart felt desires came out to play?

It may have been a dream about your business, or it might have been a dream about what your business would achieve for you.

For example I know one lady, Colleen, who wants to fund a Cancer Research Lab in her local area. Another, Hayley, wants to be a full time philanthropist, traveling to third world countries and then coming home to raise funds for aid work.

I had a dream...

My dream was to earn enough money that my husband could quit work (at the time he was a Panel Beater and hated it) and we could live a life where we never needed to worry about where the next mortgage payment was coming from.

When you do start a business with this kind of dream in mind it doesn't seem to matter what kind of vehicle you use to achieve the dream. It matters more that you think the business has the potential to make the dream come true.

I used to believe that, but as time went on and I started making progress towards my dream I realised something. The journey is just as important as the destination. Although I was making money, and could see I had the potential to make more, I was no longer motivated. I noticed I was pushing myself to get things done and rather than looking forward to each day I was starting to dread it.

I had a dream...

... but I knew I was never going to achieve it by pushing myself to do something just for the sake of reaching it. So I took stock of what I did love doing and that's how you find me where I am now.

Leap 'n' Bound: Are you finding yourself easily distracted, and dreading the start of your business day? Perhaps its time to look at what you are doing as a business, or even within your business and reassess whether the end justifies the means.

We all go through cycles of ups and downs within our business, but if you've found your downs are many more than your ups I encourage you to look deeper.
