| Write a Shopping List
This is an incredibly easy and almost “too simple” tip that can save a stack of money at the supermarket, not to mention calories and time! Whilst doing your weekly menu plan, compile a matching shopping list. It is useful to have a template version as there are always common things you buy every week - just leave room to add the extras. Sectioning the list to match where things are laid out in the supermarket makes it even easier to follow. For example, if you go to the “Deli” section first, have this as the first section on your list, then perhaps the “dairy” section, the “condiment” section, and “frozen foods” section. Whichever way you navigate the floor. Be thorough with the list, really think through your week and all the things you will need. The extra 5 minutes you spend concentrating on this can literally saves hours out of your week! Not having to run to the supermarket to get this or that, or running out of daily necessities! When you do hit the supermarket with your super list, buy ONLY what is on the list! Discipline here is what will really make the difference between this method working for, or against, you. Of you have thought through the list properly, it will be complete. Do not let marketing, “specials”, or your sweet tooth sabotage you! Make sure you NEVER go to the supermarket hungry! Always have a snack first if your fuel tank is running low - bananas are quick, easy and filling as is a tub of low fat yoghurt. Consider how much this habit will save you in terms of time, money and calories. For example, cheese at the supermarket is around $4, for the same product in a convenience store, expect to pay up to $9. How many times have we run to the corner store to grab something we forgot or ran out of? Add this up over a year, and the difference can be very significant indeed!
