| Healthy Holiday Eating
The best family vacation is a rest for everyone. No one wants to be cooking on holidays! We can all do plenty of that in our own kitchens at home. Provide family meals without slaving over a hot stove? "Impossible" I hear you think. "Expensive restaurant meals", or "fast food outlets" I hear others suggesting. Wrong. Healthy holiday eating need not involve you and a stove. Follow these helpful hints to ensure that you too get a rest on your family holiday.
* Purchase some mixed bags of salad from the local grocery store. If this is unavailable, buy some fresh salad and make up in batches. Mixed salad is a great base for healthy holiday eating. Preparing meals on holidays without using a stove will be much easier if you have access to fresh salads.
* Mixed salads are great accompaniments on wraps and sandwiches. Wraps and salads can be very healthy meals for kids without them even realizing it.
* Buy a BBQd chicken and serve it with the above salad. To make this a more healthy family meal, remove the skin as this is where most of the fat content lies.
* Buy some grilled seafood from the local fish market or fish and chip shop. Skip the hot chips if you are looking for a healthy family meal. Serve the cooked seafood with the salad you have already purchased for healthy holiday eating.
* If your family vacation destination has outdoor BBQs provided, encourage hubby to go for it. Steak, sausages, kebabs, sea foods, whatever he wants to cook.
* Purchase a nice gourmet quiche. Add fresh bread and salad to make this easy holiday eating.
* Hit the local delicatessen and make up an anti pasta platter or tapas selection. If you are in a foreign country this is a great opportunity to savour the tastes of a new region. If the little darlings are not so keen on that style of cuisine, buy them a fresh bread stick and encourage them to spread the local dips or cheeses on it.
* Purchase tinned tuna or salmon for a low carb healthy diet. Accompany it with a mixed salad for healthy holiday eating.
* Have mince free tacos. Kids love making their own meals. Provide the usual fillings and then substitute shredded BBQd chicken leftovers or tinned tuna instead of the usual cooked mince.
* Let the children make their own falaffel wraps or tortillas. Falaffels are a great meat substitute, are very filling, and the chickpeas are an excellent source of protein. Most children love falaffels due to their bland taste and texture. You can purchase falaffels pre made in the gourmet or deli section of most grocery stores. This is an excellent and fun healthy family meal idea.
Family holidays can be a rest for the family chef as well. Holiday cooking is not required for inexpensive, healthy holiday eating. As you can see, healthy family meals on your family vacation do not require slaving over a hot stove.
Put your feet up. Leave your apron at home. Enjoy your family vacation.
